The smartphone industry continues to evolve with companies pushing design boundaries even in the mid-range category. One brand that has consistently stood out with its distinctive approach is Nothing.
With the launch of the Nothing Phone (4a) series, the company is once again trying to redefine what a budget smartphone can look and feel like. The lineup includes two models—the Phone (4a) and the Phone (4a) Pro—each offering unique design elements, powerful performance, and the signature lighting system that Nothing fans have come to expect.
At the same time, the company is expanding its global retail footprint with a newly opened store in Bengaluru, while additional locations are planned for Tokyo and New York City.
Pricing and Availability
The two phones are priced differently to target different segments of the mid-range smartphone market.
Nothing Phone (4a) – Starts at £349
Nothing Phone (4a) Pro – Starts at $499
The standard Phone (4a) goes on sale March 13, while the Pro version launches March 27 and will be available exclusively through Amazon in the United States.
Interestingly, the price of the Phone (4a) Pro puts it directly in competition with devices like the Google Pixel 10a.
A Design That Still Stands Out
Nothing has built its brand around design, and the Phone (4a) series continues this tradition.
The Phone (4a) carries forward the visual style of the previous Nothing Phone (3a), while borrowing the approachable aesthetic introduced in the Nothing Phone (2a).
The Phone (4a) Pro, however, introduces a refreshed look with a redesigned camera module. Some observers note a resemblance to the rumored design direction of the iPhone 17 Pro, though Nothing’s layout remains visually distinctive.
The company has also strengthened the camera bump, claiming it is 50% more durable and resistant to wear, addressing durability concerns that earlier models faced.
The Signature Glyph Lighting Evolves Again
One of Nothing’s most recognizable features is the Glyph lighting system, which uses LED strips on the back of the phone for notifications and visual alerts.
In the Phone (4a), this system evolves into a simplified design called the Glyph Bar. Despite the streamlined look, it still supports useful features such as:
Visual countdown for timers
Notification patterns for specific contacts
Ride-arrival alerts for apps like Uber
The Phone (4a) Pro goes further with the Glyph Matrix, a small interactive display on the back that can perform additional functions.
One particularly interesting feature is Glyph Mirror, which allows users to frame selfies using the rear camera by displaying an outline of their face on the rear display.
Performance and Hardware
Under the hood, both devices are powered by modern Qualcomm chipsets.
Phone (4a): Snapdragon 7s Gen 4
Phone (4a) Pro: Snapdragon 7 Gen 4
Both devices start with 8 GB of RAM and offer 128 GB or 256 GB storage options.
The phones also share a 5,080-mAh battery with 50-watt fast wired charging, though neither device supports wireless charging.
Display and Camera Features
The displays on both devices are large and bright, though the Pro model offers some notable upgrades.
Phone (4a)
6.78-inch AMOLED display
30–120 Hz refresh rate
4,500-nit peak brightness
Phone (4a) Pro
6.83-inch AMOLED display
30–144 Hz refresh rate
5,000-nit peak brightness
Both phones feature a versatile camera system including:
50-MP main camera
8-MP ultrawide camera
50-MP telephoto lens with 3.5× optical zoom
32-MP front camera
The Pro model uses a Sony sensor for the main camera, while the standard version uses a Samsung sensor.

Build Quality and Additional Features
There are several smaller differences that help justify the higher price of the Pro version:
Metal unibody design
Slimmer bezels
Higher refresh-rate display
IP65 water resistance (vs IP64 on the standard model)
eSIM support
According to Nothing, the Phone (4a) Pro also includes the company’s best display yet and features a sleek 7.95-mm thin design.
New Headphones Join the Lineup
Alongside the smartphones, Nothing also introduced the Headphone (a)—a more affordable version of its over-ear headphones.
These headphones will launch in the United States at $199 starting March 13, offering a lower-cost option for users who want Nothing’s audio ecosystem.
Final Thoughts
The Nothing Phone (4a) series shows how mid-range smartphones can still deliver bold design and meaningful features without reaching flagship prices.
By combining unique aesthetics, solid performance, and innovative lighting features, Nothing continues to carve out a distinctive identity in a crowded smartphone market.
With new retail expansion across global cities and an expanding product ecosystem, the company appears ready to strengthen its presence in the tech industry in the coming years.
